10 Ontarians Hospitalized After Accidentally Eating Pot Brownies At A Seniors Lunch

10 Ontarians were hospitalized after accidentally eating spiked pot brownies at a catered seniors lunch.

A regular seniors luncheon got super weird this week when 10 Ontarians were hospitalized after accidentally eating pot brownies. The lunch is hosted in Parry Sound, Ontario monthly for elderly people in the community. It was held this past Tuesday.

Like every other luncheon they've had before, this week's event was professionally catered.  One of the desserts they offered at the lunch this week was chocolate brownies, which 10 of the seniors ended up eating. A little while after consuming the brownies, they began noticing various symptoms like dry mouth, disorientation, and dizziness. Some even reported nausea and vomiting.

The 10 seniors were taken to hospital where it was quickly determined that they were high on marijuana. However, the hospital became concerned that so many people were showing up with identical symptoms. That's when the police were called to investigate. They did some digging, questioned the seniors and determined that each of them had eaten the brownies.

While they have determined the source of the accidental intoxication, the provincial police are continuing to investigate. The main question they need to figure out now is how a catering company ended up serving pot brownies. If they find out that it was done on purpose, whoever spiked the brownies could be facing serious charges.

A provincial police officer in Parry Sound told CP24 that they haven't determined if the brownies were intentionally spiked or not but if someone at the catering company or elsewhere is responsible they could face noxious substance charges.

The specific charge is for administering a noxious substance. According to the Canadian criminal code, it is illegal to administer or cause any person to take poison, destructive, or noxious substance. This is considered an indictable offence.

The penalties for this charge depend on whether or not there was intent to do harm. If someone intended to endanger life by administering a noxious substance they could be facing up to 14 years in prison.

Even if someone only intended to annoy or distress someone the penalty is still pretty serious. The person responsible could face a sentence of up to two years in prison.
