10 Things Millennials Are Tired Of Hearing

I'm a lazy entitled piece of sh*t you say?

Us millennials we're brought into the world during a precarious era. The transition into the technological revolution that we've endured has given us a taste of two different lives altogether. Our childhoods were spent climbing trees, riding bikes and playing in the dirt just prior to the advent of social media, smartphones, and portable electronics. We've experienced a drastic shift in the economic and cultural climate of society and as a result are entering the workforce in a time of great uncertainty. With this period of great change comes a restructuring of societal values, traditions, and customs, something older generations just can't seem to grasp. So, if you're fvcking sick of baby boomers, parents, grandparents, and any other 50 something telling you everything that's wrong with our generation, this list is for you.

1. We're lazy

Classic. Allegedly our generation is "lazy". Baby boomers feel as though we don't want to go out and work hard for an honest wage. No. We're just disillusioned by the concept of economic prosperity that our parents got to take advantage of, and we don't fancy the idea of being exploited by corporations that extract the maximum amount of labour for the least amount of pay possible. Lazy? Nah. Smart? 100%.

2. We expect handouts

It's not so much that millennials expect handouts. It's just that in today's climate everything previous generations achieved is becoming more and more out of our grasp. Entry level positions, affordable housing and education, ya know, the basic necessities. If it sounds like we're looking for a handout we're probably looking for some sort of equality of opportunity.

3. We're too sensitive

No. We just happen to be sensitive to the needs of our ever growing diverse multi-cultural society. If you think us millennials are too sensitive consider the possibility that you harbour homophobic, misogynist, sexist or racist sentiments, something we don't fvck with.

4. We're too cynical

You got me there. I for one am a little cynical. But for good reason. I mean, the world is a little screwed up at the moment. Previous generations did rack up National debt, cause a worldwide recession, and make post-secondary education cost an arm and a leg.

5. We don't understand politics

We very much understand politics. We just tend to reject the corrupt systems in place that perpetuate inequality and systemic sexism, racism and homophobia.

 6. We're too irresponsible

We're not irresponsible. We just don't necessarily ascribe as much importance to certain customs and systems as previous generations. Just because we're not married with children and in a permanent 9-5 by the time we're 24 doesn't mean we're irresponsible. We just happen to play by different rules.

7. We lack independence

Call it lack of independence or call it being financially savvy, but a millennial in their mid-twenties still living with their doting parents is saving thousands of dollars a year working towards financial independence, something that is increasingly difficult to achieve these days.

8. We're too conceited

Sure, call it conceited, but older generations simply do not understand digital culture or technology. If you truly believe that selfies are the reason the world is falling apart then you need to maybe take a step back and realise there are MUCH bigger issues at hand to whine about. I took a selfie cause I was feeling myself, you jelly?

9. We're obsessed with social media

Social media is how we as a generation connect, professionally, socially, and academically. As a tool, it is invaluable. You cannot separate a millennial from social media, we are quite literally ensconced in it. Is that a bad thing? No, and if you think it is, then you can take your antiquated ideas and see yourself out, cause' you're slowing us all down.

10. We lack religious purpose

Millions of millennials are religious, millions are atheists, and millions are spiritual in an entirely different way. More and more, religion as an institution seems like a strange concept for millennials, as a generation we tend to be much more progressive in our understanding of spirituality.

So, are Millennials an entitled, narcissistic, irresponsible generation with terrible financial skills, or are previous generations creating unrealistic and hypocritical expectations upon us in an increasingly unstable economic and socio-political climate? I think its the latter.
