With the right strategy, you might just be able to conquer the financial burdens that the city notoriously imposes on everybody. Here are 12 Toronto life hacks that will save you a ton of money:
1. Save up to 25% on groceries with the Flipp app.
The Flipp app scans for coupons and discounts from all local grocery stores to help you save every time you shop.
2. Refer to DrinkOwl.com for the best drink specials in the city throughout the week.
DrinkOwl.com lists all of the bars in Toronto that have affordable drink specials throughout the week. You can search per day, and most prices range from $5 and up.
3. Use the interactive Toronto Free Parking map to find the places in Toronto where you can park for free.
It even shows you where in the city you can park for free overnight. How awesome is that?
4. Get a Toronto Library Card.
A Toronto Library Card gets you access to a lot of cool things, including online resources and databases, archives, e-books, magazines, movies and more. You can also use it to get into various Toronto venues, like the AGO or the ROM.
5. Sign up for a Bike Share Toronto subscription.
A Bike Share Toronto subscription is only $90 a year, and since they have stations almost everywhere in the city, it's a great alternative to transit for getting around.
6. Minimize the clutter in your car.
Studies show that the heavier a vehicle is, the more gas it will need to consume to accelerate. So if you're one of those people who basically "live out" of their cars, you might want to do a little spring cleaning.
7. For shopping: ditch the car and use the free shuttle to get to Vaughan Mills.
A free shuttle with complementary WiFi runs from Union Station to Vaughan mills twice a day - at 10 AM and 1 PM.
8. Download the Quench app to locate the places in Toronto where you can get free drinking water.
With the Quench app, you'll never have to buy another water bottle again. Just bring your refillable bottle to a participating location indicated on the app and enjoy your free drinking water.
9. Switch all the light bulbs in your house to fluorescent ones.
Fluorescent light bulbs consume almost 25% less energy than incandescent bulbs. Although they are priced a little more, they are worth the investment because they last much longer.
10. Use the interactive Padmapper rent map to find apartments in the city that offer cheap monthly rent.
If you're looking for a place to live, use Padmapper to get an idea of the type of rent you'll be paying at various apartments and condos in the city.
11. Live close to where you work.
This is pretty self-explanatory, but the closer you live to your workplace, the more you'll save on transit and time.
