12 Things To Do On Your Own In Calgary If All Your Friends Keep Flaking
We've all been there. The weather is nice, you got ready for no apparent reason, you're in a great mood, and you want to get out of the house and do something. You hit up every last one of your friends, trying to make plans, but every last one of them shoots you down.
Sometimes life gets in the way, we all have different work and school schedules, other commitments, other friends, significant others, the list goes on and on. Don't worry though, there's plenty that you can do on your own without your friends!
Next time you're all alone and in the mood for adventure, don't fret. This list offers just a few suggestions on super fun things you can do around YYC while solo! We've got everything from bookstores to workout spots, so no matter what you're into, you'll never be bored.
1. Catch a film at the Plaza Theatre
This one might seem scary, but there's totally no shame in going to a movie by yourself! You're just in the dark eating popcorn anyways, so who needs company!? The Plaza Theatre in Kensington is always showing super cool alternative films for you to enjoy, and they're not too pricey either!
2. Take yourself on a dinner date
Going out to eat by yourself can be pretty nerve-wracking, but once you get past your fear, it's actually pretty nice to enjoy a meal by yourself! Take yourself somewhere boujee so you can dress up, or go for a more low-key spot where you can chill and be comfy!
3. Explore the exhibits at the Glenbow
If art is your thing, the Glenbow is a great place to spend a day! They've always got something new going on, and are in a prime location downtown for some more exploring afterwards! If you're on a tight budget, you can visit the museum for free on the first Thursday of every month from 5 - 9 p.m.
4. Treat yourself to a spa day
Spa days with the girls are a great bonding experience, but if all of your friends are busy, or keep flaking, then you can always go solo! Go get your hair done, maybe grab a mani/pedi, or go all out with a massage! Whatever you choose will have you feeling totally refreshed and confident.
5. Spend the day reading at Owl's Nest Books
If you live in Calgary, love to read, and haven't yet paid a visit to Owl's Nest Books, then you need to go ASAP. This adorable independent bookstore has an amazing selection; hours will pass by while you're browsing through the titles and you won't even notice.
6. Sing some karaoke at Ducky's Pub
If you're bored on a Friday night, and feeling extra fearless then you should totally make a trip to Ducky's on 4th and bust out a tune! Whether you're good or bad, you'll definitely have a great time, make tons of memories, and be laughing all night long. It's also a great spot to mingle and make new friends!
7. Have a picnic in the park
With the weather warming up so quickly, odds are good you want to spend as much time outside as possible! Pack yourself a blanket, a book, some headphones, and a picnic and head to a park to go for a stroll, then relax! You'll get some sun and feel totally relaxed and refreshed after!
8. Try a new workout at Barre Body Studio
If you're like me, and prefer workout classes over hitting the gym, you should totally check out Barre Body! They offer a ton of classes at different times, and all the instructors are super friendly! It's also another great spot to meet friends while you're getting in shape.
9. Treat yourself to some ice cream from Made By Marcus
We Calgarians definitely love our ice cream, and Made By Marcus is some of the best you can get! Head down to 17th and grab yourself a scoop or two, or some soft serve!
10. Go for a walk through Nose Hill Park
There's no shortage of gorgeous parks to explore in the city, and a relaxing walk may be just what you need to clear your head. Pop in your headphones and listen to a new podcast, or your favourite song!
11. Volunteer at the Calgary Humane Society
I love animals more than anyone else, so I'll always jump at a chance to hangout with them, and you can too! Spend a day getting to know some pups at the Calgary Humane Society, you won't feel lonely for a single second.
12. Take your camera downtown to explore
Even if you're not a photography pro, you'll never be one if you don't practice! Head downtown and see what sorts of interesting sights and people you run into!
