9 Boardwalk Trails In Alberta You Need To Add To Your Bucket List This Spring

Take a walk on the wild side.

For a lot of people, myself included, going for a walk is one of the most therapeutic things you can do when you're feeling stressed out. Sure, you could take a walk around your neighbourhood, or hit the treadmill at the gym, but in my opinion, the best way to REALLY clear your head is to get deep into nature and immerse yourself in your surroundings.

Whether you live in the big cities of Calgary or Edmonton, or you reside in a smaller town, there's always a boardwalk trail nearby that might just give you the mental clarity you've been seeking. Spring has just about sprung, so there's no time like the present to lace up your shoes and get outside and enjoy the sunshine while exploring one of Alberta's most beautiful boardwalk trails:

Policeman's Creek

Bow Flats Natural Area

This trail spans about 3.9km and is great for people of all levels of hiking expertise. It's located near Canmore and features an amazing river view that will make for some great Instagram photos. Dogs are welcome on the trail but must be kept on a leash.

Boardwalk Trail

Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park

Located in Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park, this beautiful boardwalk trail will take you through a 300-year-old boreal forest - it's a great place to get away from it all without having to buy a plane ticket. The trail is just 1.2 km long, so it's great for those who are on a time crunch or are just beginner hikers.

Boardwalk

Crimson Lake Provincial Park

The Boardwalk trail that exists in Crimson Lakes Provincial Park is really a connector trail that will take you to Fallen Timber, North Woods, and Amerada trails. The boardwalk itself is only about half of a kilometer, but you can definitely extend your hike and venture onto other trails. While exploring, you'll catch a glimpse of the picture-perfect Crimson Lake.

Weaselhead Flats

Calgary

If you're craving a boardwalk adventure but don't want to leave YYC, Weaselhead Flats is the place to be. You can take in the beautiful views and hang out amongst the wildlife while you conquer the trail in the south of Calgary.

Boardwalk Trail

Strathcona Science Park

Whether you're down for a walk or some mountain biking, Strathcona Science Park has just the trail for you! This rustic boardwalk is less than a kilometer in length, but it has plenty of twists and turns that help to keep things interesting along the way. It's been rated as pretty easy to get around, so no worries if you're not an expert.

Strathcona Ravine

Calgary

Yet another boardwalk trail that you can find nestled away in Calgary is at the Strathcona Ravine. The spot is fairly quiet and lowkey, so it's particularly great if you're looking to clear your head or go out for a romantic walk with your significant other.

River Valley Trail

Edmonton

One thing that Edmonton is known for is its beautiful River Valley trails, and trust us when we say that they do NOT disappoint. The West River Valley Trail is home to a beautiful set of boardwalk stairs that are great for working out, or taking a leisurely stroll! Not to mention you'll also take in a great view of the city while you explore.

Beaver Boardwalk

Hinton

Perhaps one of the most beautiful and lowkey boardwalk trails anywhere in Alberta is the Beaver Boardwalk in Hinton. The trail will take you through the forest, past waterways, and get you up close and personal with all kinds of wildlife.

Bowmont Park

Calgary

If you find yourself in the Northwest of Calgary, be sure to make a visit to Bowmont Park! It's the perfect place for hiking, biking, or walking your dogs along the boardwalk trail! They also happen to have picnic tables in the area, so you can bring along some lunch, as well as off-leash areas for dogs, and sports fields.
