A Massive Ontario Fire Is Threatening To Close Canada's Most Important Highway (Photos)

There are over 30 fires currently burning in the province of Ontario.

Throughout the summer a number of massive forest fires have been burning across Ontario. Some of them have cause people to be on standby for evacuation at anytime.

But there’s one burning right now that is threatening the most important road in the entire country.

The fire known as Parry Sound 33 is burning over 8,000 hectares of land right now and has come within sight of closing down the Trans-Canada Highway.

What is your definition of a big fire? 76.5 square km! Uncontrolled! Flying at 300 km/hr it takes 5 mins to fly from one end to the other. Water bombers look like little yellow specks against the smoke. Good luck @ONforestfires! #ParrySound33 pic.twitter.com/7Fja0J7TMY

Flames from the fire are said to be only about 7 kilometres away from the highway.

“It certainly could impact visibility along the highway,” said Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson, Shayne McCool.

The highway will be closed if the fire, or the smoke from it, creates a danger to public safety.

And the weather isn’t helping at all, the winds today are expected to help the fire move closer to the highway.

About 800 people who were camping in Grundy Lake Provincial Park near the fire have been told to get out due to the danger.

The fire has been burning since July 18 and began about 100 kilometres south of Sudbury.
