A Second Ontario University Is Following McMaster In Becoming Smoke Free

Another school to completely butt out smoking.

After the announcement of McMaster University becoming the first Ontario university to become 100 per cent smoke-free, a second university is interested in following suit.

According to Metro News, the University of Toronto has "similar plans underway," according to a spokesperson for the university that spoke with the publication via email.

As of now, the proposal to become a completely smoke-free campus still has to go through the school's governance procedures, so it's unclear of how long it will take for this new policy to come into action.

And while the timeline of when this change could come into play, it's definitely a step in the right direction to create a healthier, smoke-free campus for all U of T students and faculty.

Rob Cunningham, a senior policy adviser with the Canadian Cancer Society, was pleased to hear U of T considering a ban and called McMaster's plan "very positive news."

This news comes following McMaster University's announcement earlier this week stating that it would go smoke-free by January 1, making it the first university in Ontario to do so.

While this is big news for Ontario, a number of Canadian schools have already become smoke-free in recent years. In Atlantic Canada, Dalhousie and Saint Mary's are smoke-free, along with the University of Winnipeg, Vancouver's Emily Carr College of Art and Design and more, according to the Canadian Cancer Society.
