UPDATE: Gabriel Wortman, suspect in the active shooter investigation, is now in police custody.
EARLIER: On Sunday morning, Nova Scotia RCMP confirmed that they were dealing with “an active shooter situation,” which continues to escalate.
As of 10 a.m. on Sunday, police are tracking the shooter across Highway 102, from the Brookfield area. He is now confirmed to be travelling southbound in a “small, silver Chevrolet SUV.”
The suspect is 51-year-old Gabriel Wortman. He is described by police as being a bald, white man, who is approximately six-foot tall with green eyes.
Mounties initially believed that Wortman was fleeing in an RCMP-style vehicle, and they have confirmed that he is dressed as a police officer.
Nova Scotia RCMP tweeted on Sunday morning that the car was not an official police vehicle, noting that the vehicle’s car number was not legitimate.
“The suspect's car is 28B11, behind the rear passenger window. If you see 28B11 call 911 immediately,” police urged.
Wortman is now believed to have changed cars.
Locals in the area are being asked to avoid Highway 4 near Hidden Hilltop Campground in Glenholme, N.S., as police believe the suspect is now in this area.
"To clarify, the suspect in our active shooter investigation, Gabriel Wortman, is NOT employed by the RCMP but he may be wearing an RCMP uniform," Nova Scotia police explained.
While officers have not confirmed any details yet, they have confirmed that there are several victims at this time.
The suspect is believed to be extremely dangerous, and Canadians have been warned not to approach him under any circumstances.
"If you see him, call 911. DO NOT approach," Nova Scotia RCMP tweeted on Sunday morning.
Local police were originally called to a firearms complaint in the Portapique area, on Saturday evening at 11:30 p.m.
The situation has evolved into Sunday morning, and remains ongoing.
