Alberta Is 'Getting Closer' To Reopening But COVID-19 Numbers Are Still Too High
We still have the same number of active cases as we did in mid-January.
On Tuesday, May 25, Dr. Deena Hinshaw provided an Alberta COVID-19 update. During her announcement, she shared that there have been 387 new cases over the past 24 hours.
She said that 565 Albertans are currently in the hospital with COVID-19, 185 of whom are in intensive care. She also reported nine new deaths within the last day.

Hinshaw noted that we are seeing a steady decline in new cases across the province. "Active cases have declined 52% from their peak earlier this month," she said, adding that this is a reminder that "our actions matter."
It's been three weeks now since the new enhanced restrictions were announced. "We are rapidly approaching a point when we can safely begin to ease measures. It's close, and getting closer every day," Hinshaw assured. "There are still more than 12,000 active COVID-19 cases. That's the same number we had in mid-January."
She said that we need to hold on for a little bit longer and continue to follow public health guidance. This announcement comes on the same day that our neighbour to the west, British Columbia, kicked off its reopening plan.
