Twitter Users Already Know Who They Want To Replace Andrew Scheer

One name kept coming up.

Andrew Scheer has officially stepped down as leader of the Conservative Party. While that in itself is big news, Andrew Scheer's resignation raises another question: who will replace him? So far, there is one name that seems to be capturing people's attention.

In the wake of Scheer quitting, the name of one Conservative Party member began trending on Twitter: Rona Ambrose.

Ambrose previously served as interim leader of the party after Stephen Harper's resignation and before Andrew Scheer's election to the position. Ambrose herself resigned from Parliament in 2017.

Scheer's resignation comes amid accusations from anonymous party seniors that he had used party funds to pay for his children's private schooling.

Despite stepping down, Scheer will still serve as MP for Regina—Qu’Appelle. He also said that whoever is chosen as the new party leader will have is full support.

"I believe in this party, I believe in our movement, I believe that we will be a government after the next election," the leader said during his resignation speech.

Not long after Scheer announced that he would resign, Rona Ambrose started trending on Twitter. Some Canadians were discussing the possibility of Ambrose stepping back into federal politics and leading the Conservative Party again.

"I would say Rona Ambrose would be an excellent fit. Not sure is [sic] she will leave the private sector back to the gong show which is called Federal Politics," wrote Twitter user @Steve_Thom77.

"I said that during the election, they made a mistake not keeping [Rona Ambrose]. She's proven she can reach across an isle [sic] and would have had a much better chance of possible swing voters (for example me during this election)," wrote @coopalupe.

"Agreed. Rona Ambrose has appeal to swing voters, especially those in urban areas. CPC can’t win without GTA and other suburbs. Rightly or wrongly, Scheer was viewed as some social conservative evangelical prairie boy. Not as relatable," @Justorbs wrote in a reply.

Despite the strong show of support, a few critics voiced their concerns over Ambrose being chosen as party leader.

"Just a friendly reminder that Rona Ambrose, as Minister of the Status of Women, in 2012, voted to re-open the abortion debate in Canada. While a big step forward for progressive conservatives, she's far from a trustworthy ally. #cdnpoli" wrote @waflerthomas.

"Rona Ambrose? The same lady who voted to reopen the abortion debate in 2012? No, please & thank you. #cdnpoli" wrote @bullock_bear.

It's still too early to know definitively who will lead the party, but Andrew Scheer will stay on in his position until a new leader is chosen.
