This Magical Island In BC Will Make You Feel Like You're In Bora Bora

This is in BC? 😯

Just off the coast of BC is a mysterious island that will make you feel like you've been magically transported to Bora Bora. You're not in French Polynesia, though—you're on Calvert Island!

Calvert Island is about 430 KM north of Vancouver and you can't just navigate there by Google Maps. There are actually fine, white sand beaches here and the colour of the water is simply stunning. The ocean is rich with life and these are some of the most pristine waters in the province.

If you love kayaking, then this is one of the most surreal places to go to witness colourful sea life through the clear blue waters. There are also plenty of hiking trails that crisscross the island and you'll be literally walking in the footsteps of the Indigenous people who lived here for thousands of years.

It's so mysterious that there's actually a secret science lab on the island. The Hakai Institute is a remote research centre that focuses on everything from oceanography and archaeology to genomics and biodiversity. They even discovered human footprints around 13,000 years old here—the oldest in North America.

Getting to Calvert Island is quite the trek. It's about a 3-hour boat ride from Port Hardy, which is itself almost a 7-hour drive from Vancouver. There are fly-in wilderness lodges like the Hakai Lodge on the island that are happy to welcome visitors to this remote outpost. You could also arrange for a water taxi service to bring you to the island. Hardcore outdoor enthusiasts can even camp here!
