Birds In Canada Are All Getting Drunk Right Now And It's A Hilarious But Very Real Problem

This has been a problem for years.

Birds have a very unique way of coping with the changing weather in Canada. As it turns out, they're all getting drunk right now, all over the country.

Drastic weather changes, especially frost in multiple forecasts all over Canada, are actually causing birds to become accidentally intoxicated. Here's how.

When the temperature drops, frost forms on the ground - like it already has this fall in Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario, among other provinces. Then, the temperature gradually starts to climb back up. During that process, berries actually start to ferment.

As a wildlife expert told Global, the frost and the warmup that follows causes yeast to form in the berries and they ferment, forming alcohol in the berries. So everytime birds eat them, which is often since berries are a major part of their diets, it's like taking a shot of alcohol.

As a result, birds getting plastered across the country and they are acting like it, too. Birds have been seen flying into windows and walls, unable to walk or stand, and as some observers have reported, even slurring their chirps and singing off-key. Some are even dying from fatal crashes or ruptured livers.

It has been such a big problem over the past few years that in the Yukon in 2014, they actually created a bird drunk-tank to help rehabilitate the birds and to keep them safe as they come down off their alcoholic-berry trip.

Drunk birds have already been confirmed in Manitoba this year, where local animal advocates are telling residents to put drunk birds in a box to help them recover and the contact their local animal organization.

Just across the border, drunk birds are also becoming such a problem that a Minnesota police force issued a warning to residents to look out for the drunk birds.
