Calgary's Legendary Mount Royal Castle Will Now Be Rented Out For This Unexpected Reason

This castle is being transformed into a new space.

Calgary's Upper Mount Royal castle is a local legend. It's an oddity, a conversation starter, and what happens behind the castle walls of this architectural marvel had previously remained a major mystery to most Calgarians. Now, all of that is about to change, because Calgary's Mount Royal Castle will actually be opening its doors to the public and renting out studio spaces, transforming into a gallery space.

Purchased in 2018 by Maillot Homes and originally built in 1946, this 5,500-square-foot space will now be converted into a collective gallery, where artists and creators alike are now able to apply to rent space inside the aptly artistic property. The castle is located at 1108 Premier Way S.W.

Seven studio spaces will be available within the building for people to rent, for anywhere between $400 to $450 dollars a month, during its two-year pilot project, according to CBC News.

Last year, the iconic building was at the centre of a frenzy, when the property was listed on a realtor site for $1.75 million. When it was listed for sale, many Calgarians' got their first-ever glimpse into the inside of the mysterious building.

The decision to turn the residential house into a business space has some locals speculating what will be felt by the owners in neighbouring houses.

Some people are on board, believing that there's no better use for the eccentric building.

As reported by CBC News, when the two-year pilot project has concluded, the owners hope to see it become a permanent cultural spot in the city.

The gallery is set to open next month in June and will feature a drawing session with live music, spoken word poetry performances, and an art installation.
