"“At least 13 countries have expressed an interest in [Canada's private refugee sponsorship system]," says John McCallum, Canada's federal immigration minister. They are looking to establish similar programs that allow private citizens to sponsor refugees and help them get settled in country.

Canada's private refugee sponsorship program was actually conceived by the Pierre Elliot Trudeau and Joe Clark governments in order to address a large influx of Vietnamese migrants in the 1970s. Its efficiency has gained it the attention and admiration of other countries around the world, who would now like to emulate it for their own Syrian relief efforts.

Australia was one of the first to test the Canadian model in 2013, followed by Germany. The United Kingdom is also looking to implement private refugee sponsorships with the help of the United Nations and billionaire George Soros.
