Trudeau Announces Canada’s Official Contribution To Rebuilding The Notre Dame Cathedral

Canada is commited to helping France in their time of need.

The city of Paris was struck by unspeakable tragedy this April after the historic Notre Dame Cathedral went up in flames. Since then, world leaders and public figures from all across the globe have pledged to contribute to rebuilding efforts. Trudeau revealed on Wednesday that Canada will help rebuild the Notre Dame Cathedral.

According to Bloomberg, Canada will be supplying France with softwood lumber and steel to help rebuild the cathedral. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau sent out a letter this week to French President Emmanuel Macron, stating that Canada was happy to lend support to the country as it moves to reconstruct the beloved monument.

Trudeau, thankfully, is not just exchanging niceties. The Canadian Steel Producers Association and the Forest Products Association of Canada have both pledged their support for the federal government to aid France in its time of need. "The success of these sectors reflects the talent and hard work of Canadians, and we will be happy to put these assets to work for France," Trudeau wrote in the letter.

Parts of the Notre Dame Cathedral were destroyed on April 15th after a raging blaze consumed the building’s famous spire. Trudeau had commented on the tragedy at the time, explaining that he was heartbroken to see the cathedral go up in flames.

Trudeau is in Paris this Wednesday and Thursday to attend the Christchurch Call to Action meeting, focused on how counties can come together to push back against terrorism and violent extremism online.

Back in November of 2015, 130 innocent lives were lost in Paris after members of ISIS opened fire and detonated bombs in the city. Last year, Toronto suffered two separate tragedies. In April 2018, a man killed 10 people in a violent van attack. Police later learned that the attacker was reportedly part of the "incel" online community in which members encouraged one another to commit acts of violence. In July, a shooter opened fire in Toronto's Danforth area, killing two in the city’s east end.

Trudeau released details ahead of the Christchurch Call to Action meeting on Wednesday.
