He says Canada's long-term care statistics are a "national shame."

Jagmeet Singh has described Canada’s long-term care mortality rates as a “national shame,” after a new report found they were among the worst in the world.

A report released by the Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) found that Canada has the worst record for COVID-19 deaths in long-term care homes compared with other similar countries.

The research concluded that the proportion of deaths in nursing homes represented 69% of Canada's overall COVID-19 deaths, notably higher than the international average of 41%.

In fact, between March 2020 and February 2021, 14,000 long-term care residents died from COVID-19 following outbreaks in 2,500 care homes, according to the study.

In a video shared on Twitter, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh described it as a “national shame” and said that “our seniors deserve better.”
