Canada's Oldest Person Has Just Passed Away And Canadians Are Heartbroken

Gibb was also the ninth oldest person of all time.

Canadians are mourning this week after it was announced that Canada's oldest person has just passed away at the age of 114 years. Ellen 'Dolly' Gibb passed away on June 5, 2019, and is recorded as one of the longest living people on Earth. She passed away 'suddenly and peacefully' on Wednesday in North Bay, Ontario.

Gibb held the title of Canada's oldest person since 2016 and was also ranked the 5th oldest person in Canada that has ever been recorded. On top of that, Gibb also ranked as the ninth oldest person ever recorded in the entire world.

According to her obituary, Gibb was born in Winnipeg on April 26, 1905, before moving to Ontario. She was happily married for 40 years before her husband passed in 1968. Together, they had two children, 9 grandchildren, and 22 great-grandchildren.

Gibb's family states her long and happy life was achieved through great genetics since all five of her siblings lived into their late nineties. Gibbs also had a good diet and took regular walks. Her family states that she had a sharp mind and remained positive and grateful until the end of her life.

According to CTV News, Gibb's famous nickname 'Dolly' came from a time where she worked at an Eaton's department store in her home town as a young woman.

Throughout her life, Gibb was featured in the media regularly due to her old age and 'zest' that she had for life. She recently celebrated her 114th birthday back in April where she got celebratory scrolls from Doug Ford.

Since Gibb's passing, many Canadians have reached out through Twitter to express their heartbreak and to give their condolences to Gibb's family. Even Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield reached out through Twitter today after hearing the news of her death.

Huffington Post states up until the end, Gibb loved to spend her evenings watching the 'Wheel of Fortune' and 'Jeopardy'.
