Canadians Are Pissed Over A Skit SNL Aired About A "Canadian Harvey Weinstein"
Canada has already been a hot topic in the United States thanks to Trump's sudden trade drama that has had countries up in arms. Though it seems Canada is once again on the brains of Americans but for a different reason that is raising eyebrows-being featured in a pretty controversial SNL skit.
The skit was meant to play with the idea of a "Canadian Harvey Weinstein" and how Canadians would handle similar sexual assault claim situations that have been plaguing American bigwigs since last year. Naturally, Bill Hader pulled an interesting Canadian accent, to say the least.
While unfortunately, Canadians don't have access to the full episode (ironic), you can watch a good chunk of it through CBC's coverage we've linked below:
While it's nice to see Canada making a cameo in a States show, it wasn't necessarily all fun and games for many Canadians. Considering the skit was actually quite tone deaf to the situations happening right now in our own country.
Canada had a sexual predator scandal in the media 3 years ago via Jian Ghomeshi (a CBC employee) and we're going through another one right now with Hedley but I guess the SNL writers glossed over those things for the sake of tired old stereotype jokes.
Given that the situation itself on its own is a pretty touchy subject without bringing other countries into it, SNL definitely was walking on thin ice deciding to make it about a "Canadian Harvey Weinstein." Overall Canadians were not remotely impressed by the feature:
Nobody in Canada speaks like this ever ...what is this accent ? #snl
And #SNL even spoofed CBC and Canada on Me Too. That was a little weird/awkward. I didn't quite get it. pic.twitter.com/QIIRy3mx7F
This isn't funny, @nbcsnl. There's plenty of actual sexual harassment that still goes on in Canada. Apparently they forgot about Jian Ghomeshi. Just because Trudeau behaves himself, unlike Trump, doesn't mean we're a country of overreacting martyrs. https://t.co/YkaNbZ5CQr
What do you think? Was it way too soon and tone deaf or do you think it was just a skit that was meant to be harmless but was taken the wrong way due to lack of research on SNL's end?
