Regina Police Are Investigating After A Car Plows Through A Group Of Protestors (VIDEO)
An incident took place in Saskatchewan over the weekend that resulted in a car driving through protesters in Regina. The protests were taking place on Saturday in solidarity with the Wet'suwet'enNation. A video of the encounter has been posted online.
On Saturday, February 8, a group of protesters gathered in Regina, Saskatchewan.
According to CBC News, the group was blocking the Albert Street Bridge to protest the RCMP arrests of Wet'suwet'en supporters in B.C.
While it started off as a peaceful protest, a vehicle was caught on video driving right through a large group of people.
The video has since been posted on social media and it is blowing up.
Narcity had the chance to speak with the Regina police about the incident.
According to Elizabeth Popowich, manager of public information with the police service, the protesters in the video did not apply for a permit for traffic control.
The police allegedly got word that there were a group of protestors in the Albert Street Bridge and officers were sent down to keep the peace.
“It looks as though a vehicle attempted to drive through the protesters. We were able to identify the vehicle's driver and spoke with him after the fact,” said Popowich to Narcity
While police did not specify why the male driver drove through the crowd, Popowich did state that the driver had recognized that he should not have attempted to go through the crowd.
No injuries were reported as a result of the close call and the police are not contemplating any charges at this time.
It is believed that there were anywhere from 80 to 100 people at the Saturday protest.
CBC News has reported that the blockade took place for about 40 minutes.
It is believed that three cars tried to break the blockade but only the one managed to get through.
Video evidence of the encounter has been posted online.
In the video, you can see the blue car aggressively push past the group of people: almost running over several.
Once the car is gone, the protestors return to their positions and continue on with their demonstration.
Multiple people, including the person filming, can be heard swearing in the background.
Over the past serial days, activists all over B.C. have been rallying for the Wet’suwet’en. Even Greta Thunberg is supporting the protests.
In B.C., at least 33 activists have been arrested as police crackdown on the blockades.
Narcity has reached out to the individual who posted the video for comment and we will update this story when we receive more information.
