Quebec Superior Court rejects Amazon's unionization-related challenge
Quebec Superior Court has rejected a motion by Amazon filed in connection with the company's challenge to unionization efforts at its now-shuttered Laval warehouse.
A union affiliated with the CSN was certified in May 2024, before the e-commerce giant shuttered all seven of its warehouses in the province.
Amazon had challenged the unionization, arguing the process violated workers' freedom of association because a secret vote was not held.
Amazon argued that this violated the right of workers to freedom of association, but Quebec's administrative labour tribunal ruled in October 2024 that the company didn't have standing to invoke that right on behalf of others.
Amazon challenged the decision on procedural fairness grounds, asserting that it had not been given the opportunity to fully present its position.
Quebec Superior Court, however, has upheld the labour tribunal's decision and dismissed the challenge.
In Quebec and British Columbia, workers can be automatically certified without a vote if a certain proportion of the workforce signs union cards, a law known as card-check certification. The Laval warehouse was certified through this process.

Report finds construction company got $42M in excess claims on Winnipeg police HQ
The commissioner of a public inquiry into the development of Winnipeg's police headquarters has found that the city was overcharged and overpaid tens of millions to the lead construction company.
Garth Smorang wrote in his final report he is satisfied the evidence presented during the inquiry, which began earlier this year, suggests Caspian Construction received approximately $42 million for excess claims, while another $1.3 million was paid to an employee of a consulting firm for project costs but was diverted elsewhere.
The inquiry is examining the city's development of a headquarters for the Winnipeg Police Service, which ran more than $70 million over budget by the time it was completed in 2016.
Smorang says had the city not been overcharged, the project's final costs would have fallen well within the total that was approved by council in 2011.
The purchase and renovation of the former Canada Post building was the subject of an RCMP investigation into fraud, but no charges were laid.
A judge in a civil court case, launched by the city, found in 2022 that Phil Sheegl, the city's former chief administrative officer, accepted a bribe from the owner of Caspian.
Sheegl had said the money was for an unrelated real estate transaction in Arizona, in which the contractor bought equity and the proceeds were split with former Mayor Sam Katz, who was a co-investor in the property.
Katz told the inquiry that he should have disclosed the sale.
He said the money he received had no influence on his votes on the project, and he was hurt by the description of the land sale as a bribe.
Smorang issued 25 recommendations relating to procurement policies and how the city handles major projects, including improving the city's request for proposals on large-scale projects.

Toronto Councillor Calls Out Ford For Threatening 'Assault' In Today's COVID Presser
Toronto city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam is criticizing Doug Ford because of comments he made at today's COVID-19 presser regarding Pfizer's CEO.

Premier Doug Ford’s comments came as he described how unhappy he was that Canada is experiencing a temporary shortage of Pfizer vaccines.
Ford told reporters that if he was in the Prime Minister's shoes he would stay outside the Pfizer CEO's house until he got an answer about the vaccines, and also said that he would "be up that guy's ying yang so far with a firecracker he wouldn't know what hit him."

Shortly after, Wong-Tam tweeted that the comment was a threat of sexual assault, saying "Premier threatens to sexually assault someone, if he doesn't get what he wants."
A representative from Doug Ford's office told Narcity that they would not "dignify [Wong-Tam's] repugnant and divisive claim with a response."
In an emailed statement to Narcity, a representative from Wong-Tam's office said the councillor stood by her remarks.
"The language he used is threatening to rape someone, and perpetuating the worst kinds of rape culture," the representative said.
In a statement emailed to Narcity, a representative from Pfizer said the company did not wish to provide any comments on Premier Ford’s remarks.
