Doug Ford Is Scrapping The Cash Incentive Program For Ontarians To Get A Discounted Tesla

Premier-elect Doug Ford is making major changes to Ontario as we know it.

Doug Ford has eight days to go until he officially steps into his role as Ontario's Premier, but he's already making some major game-changing decisions. Earlier this week, he announced a hiring freeze that would prevent many public sector industries from hiring new employees.

He also plans to scrap Ontario's GreenON program, which offers different perks to homeowners for making their homes more energy efficient. Now, it's almost certain that he'll be getting rid of similar incentives for buying electric cars.

The Electric and Hydrogen Vehicle Incentive Program (EHVIP) was created by the Liberals. It gives Ontario drivers cash incentives to support the purchase of eligible environmentally friendly vehicles, like Teslas and Ford Electric models.

With EHVIP, drivers can get anywhere between $5,000 and $14,000 towards the purchase of their electric car depending on the car's value, as long as it doesn't exceed $75,000.

Though it hasn't been confirmed, Doug Ford's spokesperson Jeff Silverstein makes it clear that it's highly likely. In a statement to CBC he said, "Doug Ford has been clear that he is cancelling cap and trade and Kathleen Wynne's climate change action plan."

The Liberal government had reportedly been spending around $75 million per year on EHVIP, and several millions more on electric vehicle charging stations around the province.
