Canadian firms signed deals worth almost $300M during India trade mission: Ottawa
International Trade Minister Maninder Sidhu says trade talks between Canada and India advanced over the last week, as he led a major trade mission to New Delhi and Mumbai.
A statement from his office says the mission included representatives from nearly 300 Canadian businesses and exporters, and resulted in 34 commercial agreements worth almost $300 million.
It also says Sidhu met with Indian Industry Minister Piyush Goyal in both New Delhi and Mumbai to push forward trade talks, as Canada and India seek to conclude negotiations to a new Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement by the end of the year.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi formally launched negotiations almost a year ago on the sidelines of the G20 leaders' summit in South Africa.
Carney confirmed on Thursday Modi will visit Toronto and Ottawa on Dec. 11 and 12, just ahead of this year's G20 summit in Miami.
The Liberals have set out to double non-U.S. exports over the next decade and have also set a goal of doubling two-way trade with India to $70 billion annually by 2030.

Police look to cause of fiery Calgary bus crash, try to identity third person killed
Police are trying to determine the cause of a fiery bus crash in Calgary that killed three passengers and injured 16 others, including a police officer.
Two transit buses were involved in the chain-reaction crash with several other vehicles Thursday on a busy road in the city's northeast.
Police say the three who died were on a bus with natural gas tanks that ignited into flames and, within seconds, intensified and caused an explosion.
They say two of the victims have been identified and work to identify the third is ongoing.
The bus driver was able to escape, the driver of the other bus was taken to hospital with life-altering injuries, and the officer who rushed to help is recovering at home.
Calgary Mayor Jeromy Farkas has said the officer ran onto the burning bus to save a child.
Police say it's too early to determine whether impairment, speed or distraction contributed to the crash.

Joly warns Stelco owner to protect jobs or face forced sale of Canadian assets
Industry Minister Mélanie Joly says the U.S.-based owner of Stelco must uphold job commitments it made when it purchased the Ontario-based steelmaker or risk being forced to sell its Canadian assets.
In a speech at the Canadian Club in Toronto on Friday, she also raised the possibility of the federal government taking equity positions in strategic industries.
But Joly stopped short of explicitly saying Ottawa was prepared to take an ownership stake in Stelco.
The minister singled out Stelco owner Cleveland-Cliffs, accusing the American company of supporting U.S. tariffs that are damaging its own Canadian operations.
Stelco announced plans on Sept. 28 to lay off up to 500 workers across its Hamilton and Lake Erie facilities, citing the ongoing trade crisis, weak demand and continued import pressure.
Stelco’s Hamilton Works produces cold-rolled and galvanized steel. The company said it would indefinitely idle both operations.
