Quebec premier announces $28 million for warming centres and emergency shelters
Quebec's new premier says the provincial government will spend $28 million in emergency funding to address homelessness.
Paul St-Pierre Plamondon announced the new funding in his first major announcement since he was sworn in as premier on Wednesday.
St-Pierre Plamondon says the money will go to warming centres and emergency shelters across Quebec.
The Montreal area is slated to get $18 million out of the total.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada joined the premier for the announcement.
She says she is thrilled the new provincial government has made homelessness its first order of business.
She noted how the city had come up with a homelessness strategy for the winter, but needed $20 million from the provincial government to implement its plan.

Candu attitude: Carney pegs 'good chances' on Canadian bid for Turkey nuclear plant
Prime Minister Mark Carney says a Canadian company's bid to supply nuclear energy to Turkey has a real shot of winning the lucrative tender.
But he says he probably wouldn't have been singing the same tune a year ago.
Carney is meeting with Turkish business leaders in Istanbul today, a day after he announced a new strategic partnership between Canada and Turkey to deepen co-operation on a range of files.
Energy is one of the pillars of that agreement, and he says the AtkinsRéalis bid to supply two planned Turkish power plants with the Candu nuclear reactor now has "good chances" of succeeding.
Carney says there's a compelling case to be made for the made-in-Canada nuclear technology and prospective partnerships with Turkish construction companies.
The prime minister says contract decisions are ultimately made business to business, but his role in Istanbul is to share how the Canadian market has evolved to be more welcoming to foreign firms and investors.

'No merit' to U.S. claims Canada is interfering ahead of midterms: Carney
Prime Minister Mark Carney says there is "no merit" to American claims that Canadians might be interfering in U.S. politics ahead of November's midterm elections.
Officials in the Trump administration, including U.S. Ambassador to Canada Pete Hoekstra, have claimed Canadian politicians are interfering in the democratic process south of the border.
Hoekstra has said the administration is watching Canadian politicians closely ahead of the midterms and warned them to butt out of American politics.
Carney has consistently rebutted accusations of electoral interference and told reporters in Turkey today that he's "disappointed" the U.S. envoy is spreading those claims.
Canadian diplomats were told this week not to meet with or attend events with candidates in the U.S. midterm elections amid a period of "heightened sensitivity."
The prime minister says Canada has deep diplomatic ties to the United States but is careful to avoid even the perception of interference in electoral processes.
