Canada Is Extending The Emergency Wage Subsidy Into The Summer

Trudeau wants businesses to keep workers on the payroll.

Help for businesses and employees will continue. The Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS) will be extended beyond June for businesses across the country. This will allow workers to get paid and even for them to be re-hired.

During his daily press conference on May 8, Justin Trudeau announced that the CEWS will continue on after June.

The hope is that the money will help kick-start the country's economic reopening and boost jobs.

Trudeau also asked businesses to bring back employees who were let go.

"It's those workers who will drive our economy's short- and long-term recovery," he noted.

The prime minister also had a message for businesses hit by COVID-19.

"The wage subsidy will continue to be there for you to help you keep your employees on the payroll."

Businesses can fill out an application online if they haven't already done so to get money from the CEWS.

Since it launched last week, employers have applied for subsidies for almost two million workers.

As provinces and territories reopen in the coming months and the CERB becomes less needed, Trudeau believes the CEWS will play an even greater role.

More details regarding this announcement will come next week.

"We created the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy to protect jobs wherever possible," Trudeau said.
