Environment Canada Issues Special Weather Statement For Toronto And The GTA

Special weather statement in effect for the Toronto area in anticipation of Wednesday night's freezing rain.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the City of Toronto, due to the imminent threat of freezing rain that can be expected to affect Southern Ontario Wednesday night.  This news follows the forecast of another large low-pressure system brewing over the Southern Plains, progressing towards the Great Lakes.

A chilly mix of snow in the afternoon and freezing rain in the evening is expected for Wednesday.  The freezing rain is then expected to transform into an occasional drizzle by Thursday morning, as temperatures are expected to reach above the zero degree mark.

“Snow will arrive Wednesday afternoon, then quickly change over to freezing rain Wednesday evening,” the statement says. “Freezing rain or freezing drizzle will then change to occasional rain or drizzle by Thursday morning as temperatures edge above the zero degree mark.”

Environment Canada urges GTA residents to allow for extra time during both morning and afternoon commutes, as the dangerous combination of wet precipitation and untreated road surfaces will likely result in icy, slippery and dangerous driving conditions.  Normal travel times will be delayed.

The weather doesn't look much better for today.  Temperatures will sit at -11°C for Tuesday morning, feeling more like -16 with the wind chill.  Although the city can expect a high of -4°C, you'll still need to bundle up as the wind chill will make the temperature feel like -9°C.  Though a wind chill of -14°C  is expected overnight, the temperature is likely to rise to a high of -4°C on Wednesday.

The extreme cold weather alert that was issued Monday will end today at noon as the temperature rises.  Another piece of good news: Thursday and Friday are expected to feel warmer, with highs of 2°C and 1°C, respectively.
