Need a new show to watch on Netflix? You need to check out On My Block, the streaming giant's latest release. It's been getting rave reviews online and 93% on Rotten Tomatoes, but that's not the only reason why you should check it out.

On the surface, it may seem like just another teen comedy, but it runs much deeper than that. It's full of drama, has many storyline twists, and deals with complicated issues such as gang violence, poverty, crime and sexuality.
The show follows a group of four friends on the brink of high school. Throughout the 10-episode series, Monse, Ruby, Jamal and Cesar try to navigate through their L.A. neighbourhood's rough surroundings, all while dealing with their newfound adolescence. I don't want to give away too much of the story, so suffice it to say that you'll be taken on an unexpectedly wild ride as the group deals with secret hookups between friends, run-ins with local gangs and a mysterious treasure hunt.
Unlike other productions with similar subject matter, On My Block manages to paint a universally relatable picture without delving too far into the negative stereotypes of inner city life that often work against it. One second they group's ducking on the street amid the sound of gunshots in the air, and the next, they're talking about who they're planning to take to the homecoming dance.
In some ways, On My Block is a lot like Freaks and Geeks, sporting the same easygoing vibe and comical dialogue. It's got a great group of multidimensional characters that you're bound to fall in love with, and an overarching plot that's worth watching to the end for. With a growing number of productions centred around people-of-colour like Coco and Black Panther, On My Block is part of movement that demands more diversity in entertainment.
