Frito-Lay Has Stopped Shipping To Loblaws Stores & Here's What It Means For Your Snacking

The top crunch-makers are crunching the numbers and you might find the chip aisle will soon begin to look a little sparse.

Due to a pricing dispute between Frito-Lay and Loblaws Canada, the chip manufacturer has stopped shipping to the Canadian grocery and retail chain, according to CBC News.

Citing the rising costs of expenses like shipping, ingredients and packaging, Frito-Lay says they've had to make "adjustments to our prices that are consistent across the marketplace."

In response, Loblaws Canada made a "difficult" call on carrying these products.

The company told Narcity, "We are laser focused on minimizing retail price increases as much as possible. That’s a challenge when our industry is facing major cost pressures on manufacturing, shipping, ingredients and more."

While the spokesperson wouldn't comment on specific negotiations, they said, "When suppliers request higher costs, we do a detailed review to ensure they are appropriate. This can lead to difficult conversations and, in extreme cases, suppliers don’t ship us products."

Frito-Lay representative Sheri Morgan told CBC that there is a "temporary disruption" with one customer.

They said that factors like "unprecedented pressures from rising costs of items including ingredients, packaging and transportation" have forced the company to up costs elsewhere.

So, you can experience a more limited chip selection in the chip aisle going forward.

Frito-Lay is the maker of products such as Cheetos, Doritos, Ruffles and Sunchips, so these items, and more, might be hard to find on Loblaw's shelves going forward.

On your next trip to the supermarket, expect to see some more President's Choice branded snacks lining the shelves, or just less chips in general, as this spat between companies continues.
