A Full Pink Moon Will Light Up Skies Across Canada This Month
Although Canada already experienced its last supermoon of 2019 last month in March, more celestial magic is coming to light up the skies and we are so excited for it. A full Pink Moon will light up the skies across Canada this month. You definitely don't want to miss out on this beautiful celestial event.
Just in time for spring, the Pink Moon will be seen across the country this month in April. According to the Old Farmer's Almanac, your chance to see this beauty is next week on Friday, April 19.
If you're in BC, the full moon will peak early on April 19 at 4:12 AM. If you're viewing the moon from Alberta, it will be most visible at 5:12 AM on April 19. If you're in Ontario, you'll be able to see the moon best at 7:12 AM on April 19.
So if you're wanting to get a glimpse of this full moon, you may need to wake up early, but at least you'll be brightening up the start of your day with something truly beautiful.
So why is it called the Pink Moon? "April’s full Moon is called the Full Pink Moon, heralding the appearance of the 'moss pink,' or wild ground phlox—one of the first spring flowers," says The Old Farmer's Almanac.
However, contrary to its name, this moon does not actually look pink – it is called the Pink Moon because it signifies the start of spring and the beautiful flowers that fully bloom during the season. Regardless, a big, full moon is always still a beautiful celestial event.
Not only is the pink moon lighting up the skies across Canada this month, but a spectacular meteor shower will be visible in April as well.
Canadians will be able to watch the Lyrid meteor shower next week from Tuesday, April 16 to Thursday, April 25, with it peaking early on Monday, April 22.
So what is the best way to watch breathtaking celestial events like the Pink Moon or Lyrid meteor shower? Although it may still be visible from your home, the further away you get from the city lights, the better viewing opportunities you'll get.
If you aren't able to wake up early to see the Pink Moon, another special full moon is coming next month in May – the full flower moon.
