Teenage Climate Activist Greta Thunberg Is Finally Coming To Canada This Month

She will take part in a climate protest in Montreal.

Greta Thunberg, the Swedish teenage climate activist that has been making waves in the environmental community, is finally going to be paying Canada a visit. Greta Thunberg's Canada trip will take her to Montreal, where she will take part in a climate protest scheduled for Sept. 27. In a tweet announcing her plan to attend the march in Montreal, Thunberg urged people to register and "spread the word!"

Thunberg had previously been invited to take part in the march by La Planète s’invite au Parlement, a climate action group based out of Quebec. The organization's spokesperson, Ben Clarkson, told Global News, "She is one of the loudest voices we have to call attention to the degrading environmental condition and emergency we have on the planet."

Greta Thunberg first received international attention when she staged protests in her native Sweden. She refused to attend school before the country's election to highlight climate change and the effect it was having on people, particularly their mental health. Thunberg has since become a global icon for her climate protests, and is even nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Thunberg's outspoken advocacy for fighting climate change has brought her plenty of international attention, both positive and negative. Maxime Bernier, a candidate in Canada's federal election, recently called Thunberg "mentally unstable" on Twitter. He walked those comments back, but still referred to her as a "pawn."

Not only has Thunberg been outspoken about climate change, but she has also talked openly about her mental health and Asperger's. She wrote in a tweet that being different is a "superpower." Though she noted that her diagnosis had limited her in the past, she has now found meaning in her quest to fight climate change.

Thunberg had made her way to the United States from England in a zero-emission sailboat in order to attend the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York on Sept. 23. She sounds like a force to be reckoned with.
