Let's be real here for just a minute - travelling is probably one of the most rewarding experiences on this earth. Not only do you get to do things you'd never get to do back home (looking at you, sipping fresh piña coladas from an in-ocean bar), but you also get to see beautiful things and discover other cultures firsthand.
And one of the most beautiful places to check out in the world? Russia! This gorgeous, fun, and fascinating country should honestly be on everyone's travel bucket list.
But, straight-up, Russia is a really long plane ride (or several) away. I mean, who here has 18 hours to spend on a plane? Nobody? That's exactly what I thought. Thankfully for those of us who want to experience the incomparable vibe that is Russia, one Ottawa show has totally got our backs.
Ottawa's National Arts Centre (NAC) will be hosting a seriously unique show starting today until September 30, 2017. A musical drama based on a super famous Russian poem and opera, Onegin is a story set in 19th century Russia about a bad boy, a good girl, and unrequited love... oh, and a whole lot of vodka shots (so everyone's typical Saturday night, pretty much).
Although this musical drama sticks true to the authentic Russian vibe and famous plot, it's also got a few modern, sexy, fun twists thrown in. For example, the actors take "real" vodka shots throughout the play, swear a whole lot, and even get the audience involved at certain points.
And since this show is a musical, the music here is super key. Don't expect to just hear tame classical music throughout the show: the top-notch score consists of upbeat, fun rock music, so you'll be tapping your toes and jamming along while totally getting sucked into Onegin's timeless storyline.
Oh, and trust, the play might be set in 19th century Russia, but the plotline is relatable to anyone and everyone who's ever been ghosted (so basically the entire world) in 2017. Onegin tells the story of Tatyana's love for the titular character, who's a bit of a playboy... there are deathly duels, passionate love letters, vodka, rock music, and a whole lot of fun to be had!
Plus, the fact that this is all going down at Ottawa's NAC is like a huge cherry on top of an already awesome sundae.
The NAC is a beautiful, newly renovated, sophisticated spot to catch a fresh and unique show with friends or impress your S/O with an unexpected date. And trust, Onegin at the NAC is going to be a whole lot of unexpected fun: it's unlike any production the NAC has ever put on before. This one-of-a-kind experience is truly something you need to check out!
