It's Official, TTC Approves Time Based Transfers

It's about time!

It was only a week ago that reports of the TTC considering time based transfers was announced. Mayor Tory and TTC Chair Josh Colle published an open letter to TTC CEO Andy Byford, urging that the TTC consider introducing time-based transfers. The request was taken under advisement, but otherwise here was no confirmation on if it would actually happen.

However, yesterday the TTC board greenlit the time-based transfer model - the catch being that the perk only applies to PRESTO card holders.

This new time based transfer will allow TTC riders to get on and off multiple vehicles (buses, streetcars, subways, etc) multiple times within a two-hour timeframe. All while only paying a single fare price ($3 for adult PRESTO card holders).

The goal is to ensure that commuters are provided a quality, flexible and competitive transit service. It also creates a more accessible and affordable transit system overall.

"[The policy] will help reduce the financial barrier and make transit more affordable for low-income riders. It will provide customers with greater access to the system, and an ability to make multiple short trips on one fare," the report by TTC staff said.

This new initiative is said to add five million customer trips annually.  And while the time based transfer program is approved, the nexts steps for would be bringing it forward to city council for budget consideration.

When it come to when we can actually see it take effect, well commuters can anticipate implementation to start in August of 2018.
