Laurentian University Is Apparently Cutting Programs Like There's No Tomorrow

Departments are getting wiped out left and right, according to professors.

After months of budget uncertainty, Laurentian University is apparently going to drastic extents to save money.

According to a statement from the university, Laurentian is shedding dozens of programs and professors in an attempt to ensure a "financially sustainable future."

The Political Science department is gone and the School of the Environment has been "wiped off the map," according to a tweet by an associate professor, who expects layoffs to continue.

Laurentian filed for insolvency back in February. The Sudbury school is reportedly millions of dollars in debt and needing "drastic and immediate action" from the Ontario government.

All in all, 69 graduate and undergraduate programs — selected due to "historically low enrollment" — are being closed. The full list of affected programs can be found on Laurentian's website.
