Toronto police say they have arrested and charged a 29-year-old man accused of breaking into a charity's parking lot over Thanksgiving weekend and stealing several catalytic converters from their trucks.
Police say they arrested the man after executing a search warrant at an Oakville residence on Wednesday and charged him in connection with the thefts at Second Harvest, a charity that rescues food en route to landfills and redistributes it to people in need.
Police say they were called to Second Harvest's headquarters in the city's west end just after midnight on Sunday after an unknown number of suspects broke into the charity's parking lot and stole truck parts.
Police say the accused, who faces three counts of breaking and entering, is also believed to have pulled off other catalytic converter thefts in the area.
Police allege the Oakville man was involved in thefts at nearby businesses in September and October that caused vehicle damage.
At a Wednesday news conference, Second Harvest CEO Lori Nikkel said the charity has received an influx of support in the wake of the thefts, and that local food importing business Aurora Foods donated $60,000 to help cover the cost of the truck repairs.

« Garantie fraîcheur » : Maxi te rembourse ET remplace gratuitement certains produits

- Les viandes fraîches;
- Les poissons et fruits de mer frais;
- Les fruits frais;

Parts of Ontario could get the first snow of the season from a fall storm this weekend
Temperatures near or below zero are forecast in some places.
A fall storm that includes a wintry mix of precipitation is in Ontario's weather forecast.
Some places could get the first snow of the season as temperatures drop to near or below zero and rain turns to snow.
According to The Weather Network, a "classic" fall storm with rain, gusting winds, a temperature drop and snowflakes is expected from Thursday, October 15 to Saturday, October 17.
The forecast has called for a blast of Arctic air that could turn rain showers into a wintry mix and bring the first lake-effect snow of the season to southern Ontario.
A low-pressure system is expected to move through the province on Thursday evening, which means it will be rainy and windy in most of Ontario, with 10 to 30 millimetres expected in southern and central parts of the province.
The Weather Network said rainfall will continue overnight into Friday between Toronto and Ottawa and taper off by the morning, but scattered showers are possible throughout the day.
Then, colder air from the north will surge into the province after the low-pressure system moves out. A "rapid drop" in temperatures and northerly wind gusts around 50 kilometres per hour are forecast on Friday evening.
Some parts of the province could have temperatures near or below 0 C on Friday evening, with the wind chill making it even colder overnight.
The Weather Network said colder air over the relatively warm waters of the Great Lakes could cause lake-effect precipitation and bands of showers downwind of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay.
As temperatures drop, some of the precipitation could turn into snow on Friday evening and overnight into Saturday.
While there is uncertainty about the mixed precipitation and how much of it southern Ontario will get, parts of cottage country and places south and east of Lake Huron and Georgian Bay could get the first snow of the season this weekend.
