This Secret Alabama Light Tunnel Is Like A Real Life 'Rainbow Road'

A lil' slice of Mario Kart IRL!

Stepping into what feels like the final course of the Special Cup, Mario Kart fans might be tempted to reenact a live-action version of the cutesy racing game here. While the artist probably didn’t have video games on the brain when creating LightRails in Alabama, the impact is the same. This art installation is a literal rainbow road that brings a splash of color, joy, and illumination to some of Birmingham's darkest corners.

LightRails can be found under downtown Birmingham’s 18th Street viaduct near Railroad Park, and it’s been bringing light and color to the once derelict walkway since 2013. It was commissioned by REV, the city’s economic development organization, and designed by artist Bill FitzGibbons.

The unique installation is created with the use of a computerized LED light system that was meant to make the dark walkways a little friendlier to pedestrians. It also encourages more foot traffic in the area of First Avenue North and East Gate of the local park.

The art project became a literal light at the end of the tunnel and is now a totally irresistible photography spot. It’s a perfect blend of old and new worlds, bringing a sci-fi futuristic touch to the city's historic tunnels.

The light installation isn’t just aesthetically pleasing, however. FitzGibbons was purposeful in his use of computerized LED lights to approach the project from an environmentally conscious angle.

You can even find works of FitzGibbons all over the world, including another LED tunnel piece in El Passo, and LED installations on the side of a massive 28-story building and tower in San Antonio.

Whether you’re just passing through or looking for the perfect photo op, LightRails is a must-see if you’re in the Birmingham area.
