Some government websites still down in response to security risk
Some federal government websites are still out of commission as Ottawa takes precautions against a global security risk.
Governments and corporations worked throughout the night on urgent security updates after the AI-assisted discovery of vulnerabilities in PHP, a programming language vital to 70 per cent of websites globally.
The office of the federal government's chief information officer says security updates are being applied and some government websites may be temporarily unavailable or experience service disruptions while the measures are being implemented.
The office says work is underway to restore access as quickly and securely as possible.
There is no indication that any federal systems have been compromised, the office says.
Artificial intelligence agents helped uncover the vulnerabilities and OpenAI says it has led a coalition of researchers, security providers and others to address vulnerabilities in PHP over the past two months.

Toronto Crime Stoppers temporarily stops accepting tips after data breach
Toronto Crime Stoppers has temporarily stopped accepting tips after it says more than 175,000 of them were stolen by hackers earlier this year, alongside nearly 15,000 names.
The organization, which allows people to submit confidential crime tips to law enforcement, says in a statement that the tip software it has used since 2018 was hit by a data breach in March.
It says the company that owns the software reported that 176,859 Toronto tips submitted between January 2022 and last November were included in the stolen data, as well as 14,973 names.
Toronto Crime Stoppers says the company, Navigate360, has not disclosed whether the names are of people who submitted tips, are named in them, or both, nor has it provided the text of the stolen tips, despite repeated requests.
The Toronto program pause comes after CBC reported that 1.5 million tips submitted to Canadian Crime Stoppers programs over the last 25 years were exposed in a massive data breach.
Toronto Crime Stoppers says it didn't stop accepting tips sooner because Navigate360 initially said in April that Toronto data had not been taken, and when the company later said Toronto data was affected, it did not say what information was exposed.
It says it is working on a "safer way" to take tips and will share details in the coming days.
Toronto police say they are aware of new information regarding the breach, which they say "raises serious concerns regarding the protection of confidential information provided through the Crime Stoppers program."
The force says it has suspended its use of the program while it reviews the new information and assesses the additional measures being put in place at the organization.

There's a new addition to your holiday to-do list and it's not another gift to buy
The easiest thing to check off your list this year ✅
Flannel, crunchy leaves and warm cider aren't the only things that come with this time of year. October also generally signals the beginning of flu season, with colder weather and more time spent indoors making it easier for viruses to spread.
And with the holiday season just around the corner, the last thing anyone wants is to miss out on festive parties, cozy get-togethers and all the fun because of the flu. Getting your flu shot is one simple way to help reduce your risk of getting sick and keep holiday FOMO at bay.
Luckily, free flu (influenza) vaccinations are available to adults in most provinces and territories, making it easier to protect yourself and those around you (and not miss out on the festivities). But despite the broad availability of the free vaccine, surprisingly few people are getting it.
According to a recent survey commissioned by Rexall, less than half of the people who responded (44%) know they're eligible for a free flu shot, and only 26% say they have gotten or intend to get vaccinated this season.
The same pattern shows up with the COVID-19 vaccine: Only 36% are aware of their eligibility, and only one-fifth have plans to get the shot.
When asked what would make vaccination easier, 41% of respondents pointed to free availability, while 34% cited walk-in access — two things that are already happening.
If you've just learned that you might be eligible for a free flu or COVID-19 shot, the next thing to do is to talk to your pharmacist and see what your options are.

At Rexall, for example, you can book an appointment online or walk in to participating locations. Rexall even offers mobile flu clinics for workplaces, retirement homes, post-secondary campuses and more.
COVID-19 + Flu A&B panel tests are also available over the counter at Rexall pharmacies and can give you results at home in just 15 minutes. If you test positive for flu or COVID-19, your pharmacist can help you manage your symptoms — whether through prescription treatment* or over-the-counter relief.
Flu season may already be here, but that doesn't mean you should worry about missing out on all the fun. Visit Rexall and speak with a pharmacist to learn more about vaccine eligibility and get your flu vaccine before the flu gets in the way of your holiday plans.
Vaccination subject to availability and eligibility.
*Prescription treatment subject to availability and eligibility.
