McDonald's Canada Is Officially Changing The Beef In Its Burgers
Whether it be drunk eats after a late night of debauchery or stopping for a much needed snack while on the go, we all know that McDonald's is the go-to drive-thru spot. And while we also know that it's absolutely the worst thing to be eating - we just can't help ourselves.
Especially when they have promotions like free french fry day. However, McDonalds just announced that there is a reason why you should feel a little less guilty for indulging, and it is because McD's is changing the beef in the burger patties to a much more ethical alternative.
The company announced, in a press release, that it will turn to a local and ethical breeding. Saying, "McDonald’s Canada announced today that it will be the first company in Canada to serve Canadian beef from certified sustainable farms and ranches, beginning with its Angus line-up."
To meet the criteria for the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB) certification, farms must be environmentally friendly by ensuring that water is not wasted, that soils and biodiversity remain healthy, and that animals are in good health. Staff must work in fair conditions and farms must help one other. Animals should be under the least amount of stress possible and live in good conditions. Finally, the meat produced must pass a series of tests to ensure that it is of good quality and considered clean.
Additionally, the certified farm must subscribe to an efficient recycling program and waste as little energy as possible.
McD's is going to buy mostly from breeders in Alberta and Saskatchewan. The meat must not contain any additives and no artificial preservatives. The company plans to serve 20 million Angus burgers over the next 12 months.
More and more people are becoming aware of and sensitive to the treatment of animals and are supportive of a local and ethical breeding initiative. When the meat is imported, there is no assurance of how the animal was fed and treated.
Beef can be injected with steroids to gain weight and fed the remains of other cows to save costs, which is very unhealthy.
McD's is the first company in Canada to take this initiative. We hope others will follow their example!
