2 BC Cities Were Ranked Canada’s Best Places To Live For People Who Don’t Drive
Put on those walking shoes. Two Metro Vancouver cities were named as the most walkable places in Canada and we're seriously inspired to get our walk on right about now. Not only can you walk anywhere in these two cities, but their public transit is also some of the best and the views just can't be beaten. What more could you ask for?
Vancity has been awarded some seriously flashy titles lately. Most recently, two major Metro Vancouver cities were named in the top five most walkable places in all of Canada.
According to the list released by Walk Score, Vancouver and Burnaby made the list, with the former coming in at number 1.
Walk Score was able to determine the best of the best by analyzing cities with populations of 200,000 people or more.
The Remi Network states that cities where errands do not require a car scored 90 points or more. Any place with a score of 70 to 89 means that more errands can be done on foot while a score of 50 to 69 means that only some can be done without a car.
With a walk score of 80, Vancouver is incredibly walkable and has a level of convenience that allows people to accomplish the most on foot.
The most walkable area is the downtown core with a score of 97. Following closely behind is the West End, Fairview, Mount Pleasant, and Strathcona in that order.
The data released by Walk Score explains that the city's population can walk for five minutes and hit up an average of five restaurants, bars, and coffee shops.
We consider that a massive win.
But if you’re not in the mood for walking, no worries — Vancouver also boasts some excellent public transit.
With about 55 bus lines, two rails, three subways, and one ferry line, Walk Score has given Vancouver transit a score of 74.
Last year, TransLink BC was even named one of the best North American transit systems and beat out many of its other Canadian competitors.
While Vancouver was ranked as having a great public bike system, the city has also been mentioned as having some of the most bike-related accidents in the world.
In the complete top five list, Burnaby was also mentioned at number four.
With a score of 60, Metro Vancouver is considered to be “somewhat walkable.”
Unlike Vancouver, if you walk for five minutes in Burnaby, you will only hit an average of one coffee shop, bar, or restaurant.
Burnaby’s public transit score beat out the walking total with a score of 67 so you may want to stick to taking the bus.
The top five list has Montreal and Toronto sitting at the second and third spots. At number five is the city of Longueuil with a score of 54.
The Remi Network explains that the most car-dependant cities are Markham and Vaughan in Ontario which were ranked with a score of 35.
