Calgary Just Got The Most Beautiful Travel Review In The New York Times

Here's what they love most about YYC 🍺🏙

Compared to some of the world's most popular travel destinations, Calgary may not stand out as a must-stop on your bucket list. Though, this New York Times Calgary article might just change your mind. A travel writer from the New York Times visited Calgary at the end of a year-long journey to some of the most beautiful places on earth and, to his surprise, he absolutely loved it.

Sebastian Modak, known as The 52 Places Traveler, visited paradises like French Polynesia, India, California, Panama, Germany, Israel, Japan, and so much more. The final stop of his journey landed him in Calgary during the winter.

Modak wrote in his article that his visit to Calgary had become a bit of an inside joke between him and his friends. “Get ready for your fall from grace: winter in Calgary,” his friends warned.

According to his article, though, Modak touched down in Calgary during a Chinook, a characteristically warm wind that blows through the Rockies.

He noted that Calgary is often treated as just an entryway to Banff National Park. He wanted to uncover what Calgary was all about for himself. He did make a brief trip to Canmore, but he tried to stay in what he referred to as "Calgary proper."

“Calgary is an oil and gas town; the 'I love pipelines' bumper stickers on hulking pick-up trucks are a constant reminder of that,” the journalist wrote.

He notes that the oil prices are going through a slump, but says that the downtown “still sparkles.”

Though many Calgarians have found themselves laid off due to the volatility of the oil industry, many “laid-off oil workers have turned hobbies into new professions,” wrote Modak. The hobbies he’s referring to are beer-related. Yes, you read that correctly.

The writer notes that Calgary has over 50 microbreweries, many of which have opened up over the past five years. He even shouts-out a few, including Cold Garden, Eighty-Eight, and Establishment Brewing.

On the theme of beer, the journalist suggested Inglewood for beer lovers as the Barley Belt where you’ll find a glorious group of breweries.

He also gives rave reviews of Bar Von Der Fels for its innovative plates and amazingly friendly service.

He noted that you can get a lot of bang for your buck when it comes to accommodation during the winter months.

Other honourable mentions included “the reason Calgary was on the 52 Places list at all,” aka the Calgary Central Library. He called the library a “gleaming jewel box.” He also shouted out Kensington’s “cottage-like homes, cozy pubs and independent shops.”

Also on his list of shout-outs was Prince’s Island Park, Studio Bell, Hotel Arts, and various charming neighbourhoods he came across.

Modak finishes his article with a beautiful sentiment about Calgary that applies to far more than just the city.

“It was a place I quickly realized I knew nothing about, which through a little open-mindedness revealed layers upon layers of surprise, beauty and complexity. I can’t think of a more representative end to the year,” he wrote.
