Miller says government moving quickly but no timeline for new digital regulator
Culture Minister Marc Miller says while he shares concerns about how long the government’s new digital regulator will take to set up, he’s unable to say exactly when that will happen.
In an interview with The Canadian Press, Miller said the government is moving as quickly as possible on digital safety bill C-16, which includes a ban on social media for kids.
Miller spoke at a conference in Montreal today which also heard from Alex Munter, head of the Canadian Medical Association, who said he was concerned about the timeline.
Government officials initially said it would take 18 months to set up the regulator but Munter said it could actually take twice as long.
Australia’s eSafety Commissioner told the conference a regulator will take time to establish, and noted her organization faced pushback from Big Tech platforms.
Miller says he’s not "naive" about that possibility but he expects the Canadian regulator to have a healthy back and forth with industry.

Ontario to table fall fiscal update next week with 'disciplined' spending approach
Ontario's finance minister says he will table his government's fall economic statement next week, on Oct. 29.
Peter Bethlenfalvy announced in a breakfast speech to the Canadian Club today that the document will provide an update on the province's finances and outline the next phase of his plan.
He did not divulge any details, but says it will continue with a "focused, disciplined and responsible approach" to spending.
Ontario closed out the 2025-26 fiscal year with a $13-billion deficit, and Bethlenfalvy says today that this year's is projected to be higher, which would be in line with the spring budget forecast of $13.8 billion.
Bethlenfalvy in the 2026 budget delayed the province's path to balance, projecting it will be in the black in 2028-29.
He says today that Ontario has weathered the impacts of American tariffs better than economists had thought, but the slower economy is having an impact and leading to deficits as a necessity.

Carney arrives in Turkey for meetings with Turkish president, business leaders
Prime Minister Mark Carney arrived in Turkey on Thursday to kick off a three-day trip aimed at deepening political and economic ties with the NATO ally.
Carney is set to meet with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Ankara, in what the Prime Minister's Office says will be the first bilateral visit by a Canadian prime minister to Turkey.
Shortly after landing on Thursday, Carney laid a wreath at the mausoleum of Turkish founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk.
Joining Carney on the trip are Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand and Natural Resources Minister Tim Hodgson.
Senior government officials told reporters ahead of the trip that Hodgson’s presence on the trip speaks to the importance of energy projects in talks between the nations.
Canada and Turkey do about $4 billion in trade annually, and formally launched talks to pursue a free-trade pact on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara earlier this year.
Carney's bid to diversify trade beyond the United States and find new global investors for Canadian infrastructure projects is well-suited to deeper ties with Turkey, said Kerim Uras, the former Turkish ambassador to Canada.
Both the Canadian and Turkish economies need alternatives to the increasingly protectionist U.S. market, Uras said.
While neither country can replace the United States with any one partner, forging connections between middle powers should be part of the path forward, he said.
"One can summarize it like the Carney doctrine meets Turkish pragmatism," said Uras, now a senior fellow at Carleton University's Centre in Modern Turkish Studies.
After meeting Erdogan in Ankara, Carney will head to Istanbul for meetings with Turkish business leaders on Friday before heading back to Canada on Saturday.
