Environment Canada Is Warning Ontarians Of A Brutal Ice & Rain Storm Tonight

Expect a messy commute.

Get ready for some more intense weather Ontario, because the Golden Horseshoe is about to be hit with 15 to 30 millimetres of rain today. Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for a majority of the southern part of the province. The Ontario weather is expected to get slippery as snow is expected to hit on Saturday, which may make your commute a nightmare. In some parts of the province, the precipitation will become freezing rain, depending on the temperatures where you are located.

Environment Canada has stated that the frozen ground will limit the ability to absorb the rainfall, so watch out for slippery black ice or minor flooding."Local ponding on streets is possible, especially where storm drains are covered in snow or ice," said their weather statement. The rain is expected to begin this evening, and will continue on into Saturday, where it will likely turn into snow. According to The Weather Network, we will see a wide mix of bad weather including rain, ice and snow throughout the evening and into Saturday. Central and eastern Ontario could get the most snow by Sunday, TWN reports. However, on the plus side, Ontario has been warmer than expected as temperatures continue to be above seasonal. This warmer weather is expected to last into February.

TWN also warns that this could bring significant tree damage and power outages to some areas of Ontario.  By Sunday, Peterborough and the surrounding area could see up to 25 centimetres of snow.

The Orangeville area is at a risk of freezing rain that could very well spread to Kitchener as well. However, the GTA is expected to get the least amount of snow, all at under 5cm for Toronto, Hamilton, Kitchener and London.

Bancroft, Kingston, Ottawa, and the surrounding areas can expect a significant dump of the white stuff, which may come with a mix of rain as well. So, wherever you are in southern Ontario this weekend, make sure to bundle up and drive slow!
