Pfizer Says Its New COVID-19 Pill Is Super Good At Keeping You Out Of The Hospital

It sounds like pills for COVID are about to become a thing 💊

Another day, another game-changing breakthrough in the fight against COVID.

Pfizer says it can keep nine out of every 10 people from going to the hospital and maybe dying from COVID-19, all thanks to an experimental pill that you can take at home.

That's kind of a big deal because you have to be in the hospital to get the best COVID treatments right now, since they're all given via IV.

Pfizer announced the "overwhelming" and positive results of a major trial involving the pill on Friday, adding that it's now going straight to the U.S. Food And Drug Administration for approval.

"Today's news is a real game-changer," Pfizer Chairman and CEO Albert Bourla said in a statement. He added that the pills could save lives and "eliminate up to nine out of 10 hospitalizations."

The drug is called Paxlovid and you take it as soon as you test positive for COVID-19, according to Pfizer. The same drug has been used to deal with HIV and it sounds like even Pfizer was surprised to see how well it worked against COVID.

It's the second big COVID pill announcement this week, after the UK gave the OK to Merck's drug on Thursday.

Both pills are meant to be taken after you've already been infected by the coronavirus, and they basically slow it down inside your body so that you don't get as sick.

The pills are not meant to replace vaccines, which you're supposed to get before you get infected.

Instead, they're meant to be a first response after you've already been infected — especially if you're at higher risk of getting really sick.

The UK is the only country to have approved one of the pills so far, but US officials are expected to take a look at them sometime this month.
