Prime Minister Justin Trudeau Was Fined $100 For Not Disclosing This Gift
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau just proved that he's just like every other government worker.
Trudeau received a $100 fine for violating conflict of interest rules when he decided not to disclose a gift that he was given last year by Prince Edward Island Premiere Wade MacLauchlan.
The best part? The big fuss was over sunglasses! MacLauchlan gifted two pairs of leather-covered aviator sunglasses to Trudeau when he visited P.E.I in June 2017.
The "Fellow Earthlings" sunglasses were worth $300 per pair. So yes, they were worth quite a lot all together, but the federal conflict of interest rules dictate that all gifts valued over $200 must be publicly declared within 30 days of acceptance.
Trudeau's press secretary admits that not declaring the gift was an administrative error.
Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner Mario Dion's office confirmed that he administered a $100 fine to Trudeau, which has been paid.
Oh, and this isn't the first time that Trudeau has been reprimanded by the ethics office. In December, Mary Dawson found Trudeau broke ethics laws over two all-expenses-paid family trips to a private island in the Bahamas.
