An Ottawa man has been arrested by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) for posting "numerous" threats on Twitter.

The online posts were described as "death and terrorism-related" and were aimed at Parliament Hill, the Department of Defense, the Embassy of the People's Republic of China, as well as the Embassy of the United States of America in Ottawa.

Officials were made aware of the Twitter posts on November 8, according to a press release.

"All threats to the public are taken seriously, including tweets on social media," said Staff Sgt. Pascal Herbert of the RCMP's Integrated National Security Enforcement Team (INSET). "This file demonstrates how communication between departments plays a key role in keeping our communities safe."

According to police, the person behind the tweets was identified as 19-year-old Daniel Houde, of Ottawa.

He has since been arrested and charged with four counts each of perpetrating a terrorist hoax, uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm to a person, and uttering threats to burn, destroy and damage property.

Houde has since been released on unspecified conditions and is due in court on January 18.

It's not clear what exactly was said or what threats were specifically made in the tweets, other than the groups that were allegedly targeted.

RCMP had advised anyone who suspects someone of planning or supporting terrorist activities to call the National Security Information Network at 1-800-420-5805 or by email at RCMP.NSIN-RISN.GRC@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.

Vancouver Coastal Health is warning anyone in the city's downtown who has had contact with a possibly rabid skunk to get a medical assessment immediately after a video emerged on social media.

The video posted on Facebook on Oct. 10 shows a skunk struggling to cross a Vancouver street, attracting a number of bystanders before a man picked up the animal using a sweater and moved it onto the sidewalk.

Incumbents have almost unbeatable head start in GTA elections

Thirteen of 14 immigrant and visible-minority candidates in the analysis won their races.

A seat on a municipal council is a stronger predictor of success for immigrant candidates than how much money they raise for their election campaigns, according to an analysis by New Canadian Media and interviews with academics who study electoral dynamics.

With Ontario voters heading to the polls on Oct. 26, NCM reviewed the audited 2022 financial statements of 14 candidates in Toronto, Mississauga and Brampton who have publicly identified as immigrants, the children of immigrants or members of a visible minority. Thirteen won.

The head of Canada Post says it is showing “early signs” of financial recovery despite falling revenue and bigger losses in the first half of the year.

CEO Doug Ettinger says the postal service is winning back some of the parcel delivery market that has slipped away since 2019 as it continues with shipping discounts for small businesses and pushes a new online marketplace for them to sell products directly to consumers.
