Shawn Mendes Once Thought Meghan Markle Was Canadian (VIDEO)
It's not uncommon for Canadian celebrities to get mistaken as Americans, but it is pretty unusual for someone to mistake an American celeb as a Canadian. Usually, fans are the ones to make this mistake, but it turns out that Shawn Mendes and Meghan Markle's Canadian bond had the singer a bit confused. Both celebrities have lived in the 6ix, but only one of them was born in Canada.
Back in May of 2018, Mendes made an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show, where he and the host talked about his recent (at the time) run-in with the British royal family.
The "Treat You Better" singer ran into Prince Harry and Markle at a gala celebrating Queen Elizabeth's birthday. According to Mendes, he wanted to approach the couple and say hi, but quickly found himself starstruck and ran away.
"This is going to be my biggest regret forever. I was walking down the hall and I see them in one room and they’re just talking," the singer said. "And Meghan’s Canadian, so I felt like, ‘Oh this is great, I can go and say hi, she’s Canadian."
While Markle did spend many years living in Toronto filming Suits, she was actually born in Los Angeles, so she isn't technically Canadian as Mendes said.
Regardless of her nationality, the 21-year old was still left totally mesmerized by the awkward encounter.
"I walked in with this confidence and the second they kind of felt me coming I just turned around and my body went numb and I was like, I can’t do it, I can’t do it. I’ve never been so star-struck like that," he told DeGeneres.
As it turns out, Mendes also had an awkward encounter with the Queen of England herself on the same night.
"I’m standing there waiting to go on stage and the Queen just walks up next to me and she’s standing there. I’m looking at her… and you can’t say anything. You’re not allowed to speak to her unless she speaks to you first," he explained.
"So it was like 10 minutes of this awkward silence between me and the Queen. She didn’t look at me at all. I looked over a couple times and I was like, 'I probably shouldn’t be looking'. It was super weird."
However, Mendes and Markle have something in common: they'll both be living in Canada part-time. The "Lost in Japan" singer has a home in both Los Angeles and Toronto. It was just confirmed by the Queen that the former Suits actress, Prince Harry, and their 8-month-old son Archie will be splitting their time between Canada and the U.K.
