'Well-known evil empire': Barack Obama mocks President Trump's tariff war with Canada
Former president Barack Obama took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs on Canadian goods Saturday during an impassioned speech at a Democrat campaign rally in Detroit, Michigan, ahead of next month’s U.S. mid-term elections.
Obama mocked the current president’s tariff war with its northern neighbour while jokingly referring to Canada as a "well-known evil empire" and the home of Martin Short and maple syrup.
The former president says Trump has upset Canadians through his abuse of the country and talks of making it the 51st state.
He says the impacts of the tariffs are particularly evident in Michigan, where auto industry supply chains are deeply integrated with Canada and automakers have long said tariffs increase production costs.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney imposed dollar-for-dollar counter-tariffs in September after Trump established 50 per cent tariffs on billions of dollars in Canadian goods, including motor vehicles.
Trump says he will lift some of those 50 per cent tariffs at the end of the month, while adding tariffs to dozens of new products, including Canadian garbage and sewage.

BC NDP Leader David Eby wins Vancouver-Point Grey, loses election
The Canadian Press decision desk is projecting that British Columbia NDP Leader David Eby has been re-elected in his riding of Vancouver-Point Grey, but his party has lost the election to the B.C. Conservative Party.
Eby has held the riding since 2013 after defeating then-premier Christy Clark of the B.C. Liberals, cementing his reputation as a political giant killer.
He would go on to become premier himself in 2022, after the late John Horgan stepped aside as NDP leader.
Eby resigned as the NDP leader tonight, five weeks after calling an election two years early in what was the biggest gamble of his political career.
Lorne Doerkson's Conservative Party has won a majority government.
Eby says he accepts full responsibility for the outcome.

BC Green Leader Emily Lowan wins bid for riding on Vancouver Island
The Canadian Press decision desk is projecting victory for BC Greens Leader Emily Lowan in the Vancouver Island riding of Saanich North and the Islands.
Lowan became leader of the provincial Greens in September 2025, succeeding Sonia Furstenau.
At 26, Lowan is among the youngest leaders of a major political party in Canada.
She takes over the riding from fellow Green Rob Botterell, who won the seat in 2024 but decided not to seek re-election.
The riding is a Green stronghold, having been held by Adam Olsen from 2017 to 2024.
Before leading the Greens, Lowan was a climate action activist who played a key role in a student-led campaign at the University of Victoria that resulted in the school directing investments away from fossil fuels.

Councillor Joy McGregor
Around the one-hour mark of the video conference, we hear McGregor's comments.
According to CTV News, the Driftpile Cree Nation responded to the comments on Sunday, November 8 in a press release.
"I am calling on our members to move away from supporting Slave Lake’s economy, similarly, we will not be making any capital expenditures in Slave Lake until such time as we receive a public apology," said the release.
Narcity has reached out to Joy McGregor and the Driftpile Cree Nation for comment and we will update this article when we receive a response.
Following her comment in the meeting, McGregor said "I know that that sounds horrible and there will be people down my throat for it. But they have to be accountable. And we have to get them home."
She also noted that homeless individuals have been stealing and "drinking" hand sanitizer and suggested it be hidden away in store aisles like mouthwash.
