Vancouver Is Getting A Massive New Chinese Mega-Market This Month

Sungiven is opening it's first Canadian shops downtown!

There can never be too many options when it comes to grocery stores and a new one is coming to Canada soon. Sungiven Canadian stores are opening at three locations in the Vancouver area in the next few months. There are plans for more openings in B.C. and across Canada.

With more than 100 stores in China, Sungiven is opening up its first Canadian location in Vancouver in mid-November. The 14,000 square foot grocery store will be open for business in the City Square shopping centre.

"We believe there’s a niche market for us because we don’t see any Asian stores right now that is offering high quality at this moment. We don’t want to be like a big box. We are not a big box. We want to be focusing more on our quality and our price," said Terence Fong, senior vice-president of Sungiven Canada, to Retail Insider.

After the first store opening in Vancouver, two more will follow in the Vancouver area. The second store will open in December and the third will open in early 2020.

Beyond that, Sungiven wants to have up to 15 locations in B.C. over the next few years.

Fong said that expanding to other parts of Canada is definitely something Sungiven is planning to do.

"But first we want to make it in Vancouver first and then after that elsewhere in Canada," he said.

Sungiven is focused on providing food that is natural, less processed and has less artificial additives for people who love to cook.

Four of the company's private label brands will be sold at the Canadian locations along with its non-GMO products.

According to Retail Insider, Vancouver was specifically chosen to be the first Sungiven location outside of China because of the large Asian population there.

It turns out the company also has a Canadian connection already.

"Vancouver is our first overseas destination. Our owners immigrated from China to Vancouver in 2004. So they are now Canadian," said Fong.

For the near future, Sungiven locations will solely be in B.C. but the grocery stores could be popping up across Canada in the coming years.
