You Can Skate Across A Rail Bridge Under Twinkling Lights In Winnipeg This Winter
When it comes to classic winter activities, skating is one of the best especially when its outdoors and you're surrounded by beautiful lights. The Forks skating trail in Winnipeg is now open for the winter and you can skate across a rail bridge under twinkling lights. So put on that warm winter jacket, lace up your skates and head to the trail.
Right in the heart of downtown Winnipeg is a winter wonderland that you don't want to miss out on. The on-land skating trail at The Forks is officially open for the season.
At the junction of the Red and Assiniboine rivers, this meeting place in the city and top tourist attraction has turned into a magical frozen world thanks to cold temperatures and winter weather.
The one-kilometre land skating trail that's open at The Forks takes you across a rail bridge where you can skate along the ice under a blanket of twinkling lights all winter.
The bridge has a lane for skating and a lane for walking so even if you don't know how to skate you can still take in the magic of it all and be surrounded by the lights.
But if you're skating during the day, the trail is still so beautiful even without the lights on.
The skating trail at The Forks isn't just along the lit-up bridge.
You can also glide on the upper trails with trees on either side of you and lights to guide you along the way in the dark.
There is also a skating rink under a huge canopy in the Arctic Glacier Winter Park at The Forks.
On Sundays, the park's adventure programming includes horse-drawn wagon rides, Indigenous programming and Soul on Ice which turns the skating rink under the canopy into an icy dancefloor.
The on-land skating trail isn't the only place for skating at The Forks but unfortunately, the River Trail has yet to open for the season because of the river's high water levels.
"The river is unprecedentedly high, so we're working with conditions that we haven't particularly ever worked with before. Obviously, safety is our number one priority," said Larissa Peck, The Forks communications manager, to the Winnipeg Sun.
When it does open, it's actually the longest naturally frozen skating trail in the world so it's pretty special.
Even though the River Trail might not open at all for this season, there is still lots of winter fun to have at The Forks and on the amazing on-land skating trail.
