Actress Elisabeth Moss Says The Handmaid's Tale Season 2 Is Going To Be Absolutely "Gut-Wrenching"
The Handmaid's Tale has been absolutely killing it lately.
Other than being a hard-hitting, award-winning sensation, the Hulu dystopian drama cleaned up at the on Sunday night, nabbing the Best TV Drama award and earning Elisabeth Moss the Best Actress in a TV Drama trophy. The series, based on Margaret Atwood’s novel, was up against The Crown, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and This is Us.
It's a smash hit on all levels, and amidst all that recent winning and praise, the show's creator has dropped a few new details about the upcoming second season. So get excited.
While backstage at the Golden Globes after the show's big win Sunday night, creator and executive producer Bruce Miller said that Season 2 will venture into the colonies, and that the show would expand the world of Margaret Atwood's novel.
This is big news for fans of the show, who have heard plenty about the colonies - areas used as a punishment for enemies of the nation - in Season 1, but have never actually seen them. We do know, though, that when we do finally see them, they're not going to be pleasant.
Back in Season 1, Moira (Samira Wiley) reveals to Offred (Elisabeth Moss) that when she was caught trying to escape Gilead, the oppressive nation's leaders made her choose between working in the brothels or being banished to the colonies. The fact that she chose to become a a Jezebel and work in a brothel shows how bad life in the colonies must be.
The novel and the TV show also ended in the same way, so we know that Season 2 is going to tell a completely new part of the story. And it's going to be darker. Much darker. Elisabeth Moss told The Pool: "It's going to get worse," before hinting at the Golden Globes that the second series will be both "gut-wrenching" and "inspiring".
She also warned viewers about the premiere of season two: “Don’t try to guess what happens in that first scene of episode one in season two. You will never get it, and I mean that objectively as a viewer. You just won’t guess, and I love that so much”.
From what we know so far, we can expect The Handmaid's Tale to delve further into the colonies, and there's a good chance Ofglen (Alexis Bledel) - who we last saw stealing a Gilead official's car before being taken away by armed guards - is there.
Whether Nick and Offred meet up with Ofglen, we follow her stand-alone story, or we get glimpses of the colonies in other ways, one thing is for sure: we will definitely be seeing a darker side to Gilead than we have ever seen before.
Season 2 of The Handmaid's Tale will consist of 13 episodes and will likely premiere on Hulu later in 2018.
