These Are America's Top 10 Deadliest Beaches & Almost All Of Them Are In Florida

One of them is considered the "Shark Bite Capital of the World."

America's deadliest beaches were ranked, and while Florida beaches are a popular vacation destination attracting tourists galore, the state's coastal attractions made the majority of the list.

In fact, Travel Lens categorized seven sandy shores in the Sunshine State out of 10 locations, and every single one is on the East Coast of the U.S.

The company researched the number of fatalities from surf zones, the number of shark attacks and where hurricanes hit the most.

Ranking at No. 1 is New Smyrna Beach in Central Florida just north of Orlando. This beach is considered the "Shark Bite Capital of the World," according to the Florida Museum of Natural History, so it's no surprise it's the top most dangerous beaches in the nation.

The list is as follows:

  1. New Smyrna Beach, FL
  2. Cocoa Beach, FL
  3. Ormond Beach, FL
  4. Panama City Beach, FL
  5. Myrtle Beach, SC
  6. Melbourne Beach, FL
  7. Jacksonville Beach, FL
  8. Oak Island, NC
  9. Gulf Shores, AL
  10. Fort Lauderdale, FL
Travel Lens placed each beach based on a scale out of 10 — 10 being the most dangerous. New Smyrna Beach received an 8.14/10.
Cocoa Beach, Ormond Beach and Panama City Beach all reached around 7/10.

In July of 2022, a surfer was bitten by a shark on New Smyrna beach, as reported by ClickOrlando, however, he did survive the injuries.

Though this central beach is taking the crown in most categories, Panama City Beach has reportedly had more surfer zone fatalities since 2010. That number is 24.

In 2022, Florida took up 39% of shark bites, South Carolina at 10%, North Carolina at 5% and Alabama at 2%, as reported by the Florida Museum of Natural History. This data came out on February 6.
