This Is Why You Love Or Hate Coffee According To Science

It's actually genetic.

For many of us, the day doesn't actually begin until we get our first cup of coffee. The immediate sense of relief and comfort that accompanies it has become such a necessary part of my morning that I can't imagine life without it. This is why my friends who "don't like coffee" are so confusing to me. What's not to like? How can you even live without it? Why am I even friends with such losers? Just a few of the questions that run through my head..

According to a study conducted by University of Toronto professor Dr. El-Sohemy, there may be a scientific reason why people either love or hate coffee. El-Sohemy focused on one gene in particular: CYP1A2. This gene controls an enzyme (also named CYP1A2) that determines how quickly our bodies are able to break down caffeine.

Essentially, people who inherit two "fast" copies of CYP1A2 from each parent are fast metabolizers and have the ability to break down caffeine about four times faster than those who inherit two "slow" copies of the gene.

What all this means is that your friend who doesn't like coffee probably isn't a sociopath, but instead you just have better genes than them. Kidding! (kinda).
